Finding and Cultivating Inspiration

Whether you work a creative job or just love art and creativity, I’m sure you know that inspiration is often a driving force behind producing innovative work and fostering new ideas. Sometimes inspiration evades us, leaving us struggling with writers block or lacking a compelling concept. The next time you are coming up short in the idea department, try one of these three tricks. Investing your time in condensing and focusing on things that you appreciate will lead you towards creating your own personalized inspiration.

Make a mood board

All you need is a plain surface and some tape. Whether you do it on your bedroom wall, on a cork board, or on your computer, a mood board is a collection of images that come together as a cohesive group, and have a unifying theme or aesthetic. Turn to Pinterest, and create hundreds of mood boards for different concept references, or grab some scissors and cut out the pages of your favorite magazine. Not only will this board provide beautiful visual references, but it will be fun to make and serve as a stress reliever.

Create a quote book

Creating a quote book is as easy as it gets. Pick up a small notebook that can be easily stored in your purse, and keep it on you at all times. Every time you read a quote, notice a lyric, or hear a conversation that inspires you, jot it down. This book will become a collection of words that mean something to you. When you are lacking inspiration, pull out your notebook and leaf through the pages. Something you read is sure to get your creative juices flowing.

Get Outside

When all else fails, take some time to immerse yourself in nature. Get away from your desk, get out of your house, and leave your phone in the car. This doesn’t have be a grand excursion. It’s as simple as driving down to the beach, wandering through your neighborhood, or just finding a quiet place to sit and look up at the sky. Try to leave all your stress and mental clutter at the door for a few minutes. Reset, and then try again. This time, new ideas should enter your mental space.

Go and create something beautiful!
